Hugh Laurie Live Broadcast on the Guardian.co.uk
As the tipping point in our high impact launch for Hugh Laurie, we arranged for a live performance to be broadcast on the Guardian’s website.
It was my job to get the stream set-up so I worked with Matt Cummins in our IT department to make sure that the stream could be delivered without any hitches.
The 3 song performance was delivered to Guardian visitors through a Brightcove player. I configured the player and live asset to provide an embed code for the site, making sure the video would be streamed smoothly and in high quality. The broadcast was powered by Wirecast software and set-up on a dedicated machine with a high speed connection. It was a pretty high risk learning cuve but I learnt the ins and outs of using Wirecast very quickly. After rigorous testing everything was in place and ready for me to push the button and start the broadcast. Those were easily the four most stressful mouse-clicks I’ve ever made.
While Matt and I sat broadcasting the video from a cold and dull data centre, the show attracted a huge audience from around the world, announcing Hugh Laurie’s debut album in style.
