Fenech-Soler full screen video holding page
After a year-long hiatus, Fenech-Soler are back. On the 22nd October the band unveiled a brand new song and video.
To re-engage fans and tease the release I built a new holding page for https://www.fenechsoler.co.uk based on designs by Kate Brighouse.
The holding page features a full-screen YouTube embed with an opaque header and footer floating above it. Every day before unveiling the new song I updated the page to include a new teaser video.
To make the user experience as smooth as possible I customised the YouTube embed settings to hide the player controls as well as automatically playing and looping a playlist so viewers could see all the teasers in a row.
I used jQuery to trigger the thumbnails and swap the videos if a user clicks on one of them.
The navigation also includes a sign-up widget that opens in a fancybox pop-up. I also included all the relevant meta data to ensure that sharing the page on Facebook would embed YouTube playlist with the most recent teaser playing first.
Due to the ongoing publishing disagreement with YouTube and GEMA (the German publishing authority) the YouTube videos didn’t play in Germany. To solve this I used the ipinfodb json api to identify German users and show them a Brightcove playlist instead of the YouTube one.
The site was a very effective way to re-introduce the band with a sense of mystery and showcase the new music video.
