The Overtones Tweet to Unlock Campaign for Operation Smile

In November 2013 The Overtones recorded a charity single to support the great work done by Operation Smile.
To launch the video for the single I created a simple tweet to unlock campaign. In keeping with the charity, I created an animation of a smile slowly growing as people tweeted #shareasmile.
The campaign was run on Operation Smile’s website so I provided a simple iFrame embed code to the charity.
I wasn’t given a lot of time to build the campaign so my experience with other tweet to unlock projects really came in handy. I ran a cron-job to make regular authenticated calls for new tweets using the Twitter API v1.1 adjusting the progress as fans tweeted.
The jQuery animation was very basic but fitted into the site’s aesthetics very well. Every few seconds the progress would automatically update and raise the level of the smile. It didn’t take Overtones fans long to create a full smile and reveal the video in aid of the charity single.
