Photos: Milk Teeth Live at The Old Blue Last
I’ve been following Milk Teeth online for a few months and was really looking forward to the opportunity to see them live. So when they announced a free show supporting Moose Blood at The Old Blue Last, I decided it would be a good opportunity to get back into attending smaller shows. I’ve also neglected gig photography for a while so this seemed like a good opportunity to get my eye back in.
The whole night really felt like I was reliving my student days in Cape Town. From convincing Andrew, an old university friend, to join me through to taking photos in a dimly lit pub with no photography barrier. It was awesome! Obviously the light wasn’t ideal for photography, but I think I managed to get a few decent shots.
Milk Teeth were great, they were so loud that my ears were ringing for two days after the gig. With two very different vocalists, I can’t decide if they still need to find their sound or if they need to let the contrast define it. The songs Becky sings definitely have a wider appeal as the obvious choices for singles, but Josh makes the loudness louder and there’s something unique when you blend those elements together.
Sadly I missed the headliners. We went downstairs to get some air and a beer but a massive queue formed to get upstairs where Moose Blood had already started their set.
There is a real resurgence of 90’s Alternative/Grunge/Punk going on at the moment. It’s fascinating and equally exciting that 20 years after Kurt Cobain’s death, 20-something-year-olds are making music that would have fit perfectly into that era.
