Photos: Caprivi Strip, Namibia (Honeymoon in Southern Africa Part 7)
Our honeymoon roadtrip took us across more than 2,000 km of dirt roads through Namibia, as we reached the end of the Namibian league we took to the incredibly modern Trans-Caprivi Highway and made our way to the Northern border of the country. I’ll stand by my statement that the highway is modern but, as a reminder of where we were, at one point we had to stop and let a herd of elephants cross the road.
The Caprivi strip is a fascinating piece of land, jutting out of the North-Eastern part of the country, hugging the Okavango River that acts as the border between Namibia and Angola. The political history of the area is intriguing, from colonial negotiations between the Germans and the British to the more recent attempt at Caprivi independence in the late 90s. Even though the Namibians in the area don’t have much, it was inspiring to hear that many Angolans are welcome to cross the river to receive education and healthcare.
We stayed in the beautiful River Dance Campsite where we enjoyed our breakfasts watching the Okavango drift by, and in the evenings we were serenaded by noisy Hippos on the river banks. We took a private sunset cruise along the river with our personal guide, David, who shared a wealth of information on the wildlife, birds and local area.
Ending our stay in Namibia we followed the highway to Kasane where four countries almost meet (Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia) and crossed over to Botswana for the next phase of our epic journey.
