Photos: Khwai River Game Reserve, Botswana (Honeymoon in Southern Africa Part 10)
Having flown in a hot air balloon and a helicopter, the next league of our journey required another small aircraft; a six seater aeroplane. Climbing into the tiny aircraft in Kasane airport our takeoff was delayed by the arrival of Botswana’s popular president. We caught a glimpse of him on the runway before we were cleared for takeoff ourselves. It was a bumpy ride for almost a full hour as we flew over Chobe National Park.
Touching down on a gravel runway we entered a drier part of the Okavango Delta. The Khwai River concession is a rural community with rich wildlife. We stayed in Sango Safari Camp, which was great accommodation and a very serious focus on getting the most out of your game viewing time. We were woken at sunrise and spent all morning tracking wildlife, before returning for lunch, a brief break and then another full afternoon of game viewing.
We were rewarded with loads more elephants, including some very young calves who were a joy to watch. We got to see a Hyena with her playful pups, large buffalo as well as various antelope and birdlife. We spent a lot of time tracking a leopard and but sadly missed out on seeing her.
